Pattachitra Paintings are one of the most famous and oldest art forms of Odisha. The name "Pattachitra" comes from the Sanskrit word Patta which stands for canvas or Chitra. It is a painting done on canvas with rich and colourful motifs and designs. These paintings showcase simple themes, mostly mythological characters.
Navagunjara is believed to be a form of Lord Vishnu and is said to have the features of nine animals. It has the head of a rooster, the neck of a peacock, the waist of a lion, a bull hump on the waist and the tail of a serpent. It stands on three legs, comprising the legs of an elephant, tiger and deer. Its fourth leg is made of a human arm carrying a lotus. This form is known as Visvarupa due to the features of nine different creatures.
It was during the exile of Pandavas when Arjuna saw Visvarupa. Both excited and terrified, he picked his bow to hunt it down. Just then, he heard a voice and noticed the lotus in one hand. That’s when Arjuna realized that it was a form of Lord Vishnu, and lowered his weapons to bow down to Navagunjara.
